My Students

Imagine trying to win a formal debate against someone who has access to the Library of Congress, when you only have your living room bookshelf. My Speech and Debate team members are finding there is nothing worse than trying to prove a point without enough evidence to back up your position.

I teach a competitive speech course, and coach the Speech and Debate team at a comprehensive charter high school that focuses on college preparation.

The team is made up of 9th - 12th grade students who are hard-working, motivated, intelligent, college-bound kids, who take great pride in their school and their team.

My Project

Speech and Debate requires students to perform plenty of research. Currently, our classroom has only one computer for 36 students to use. With these numbers, students can go quite a while without access to the Internet. This puts our team members at a distinct disadvantage, as many of the other Speech and Debate teams in our area are from predominantly higher-income areas and long-established teams. When tournament time rolls around, the it is the perfect pieces of evidence that can make the difference between a win and a loss in a debate round. Having more HP Netbooks in the classroom would allow more students access to the Internet during class, and would level the playing field at Speech and Debate tournaments.

Speech and Debate is one of the most highly-rated activities when it comes to college admissions.

Being on the Speech and Debate Team provides our students with an opportunity to develop critical thinking and communication skills that is arguably unmatched by any other activity offered. Your help will allow our team members to make the most of this extremely important opportunity.
