Mr. Brand from Itta Bena MS is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need an LCD projector, so that they can be taught in a technonology infused classroom so they can have the best chance to succeed in a technology driven world.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Most of the money and effort that go into the schools go into helping low-performing, poor and minority kids to achieve basic proficiency. It largely ignores the idea of helping gifted kids reach their highest potential, leaving those tasks to our already poor local Delta school districts.
My students are all intellectually gifted, from grades 3-8.
However the gap is wide at Leflore County High School in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Our graduation rate is one of the lowest in the state, and the average 10th grader reads on a 4th grade level. My students have a chance of breaking their cycle of poverty, but they are rarely given the resources or attention necessary to do so. My students are given a label as gifted or as the smart kids, but that is often times all they are given, a label. My students all have big goals, and I do what I can to get them there, but there is only so much that can be done without proper resources. Many of them want to go into careers that will help out other people, and I want to see that that can happen.
Being aware that technology is a key component in the future success of my students, we have embarked on incorporating technology into teaching higher-order thinking skills which will prepare my students to be today’s learners and tomorrow’s leaders. Every classroom and auditorium needs a projector these days. And since most schools are chronically short of funds, those who buy on their behalf are always looking for the absolute best bang for the buck. If I were to have a projector it would help tremendously for those students who are visual learners. I am making many strides with them in terms of their writing, but for this next semester, I would like to work on their vocabulary. It would also allow for use to better incorporate more multimedia into the classroom. They have taken a liking to The Bill Moyers Journal, and after viewing An Inconvenient Truth they started planning a school garden. This Projector can better inspire my students to learn and be active in this process.
The aim of my class is to become more global thinkers and learners.
It is geared so that all of my students will not just get to college, but will finish and be successful in doing so. This aim in unwavering from the 3rd graders through the 8th graders which I teach. We work on main skills needed to be successful in school: researching, writing, reading, and presenting. Anything you do to insure that they have a better education will create a better future for my students and their world.
