My Students

"The world is a classroom" is a motto that I believe. With state assessments, the school atmosphere has shifted to extreme focus on academic skills. I do agree that our youth needs to know the standards, but also know that learning to build character skills is just as important.

We are a small school district on the fringe of a city.

We continue to have financial problems due to the high need of our students and minimum tax base/ current state funding formula. I believe it is accurate to say that about 70% of our student population receives free or reduced lunch. We are a low socio-economic district with almost a doubled average figure of Special Ed. students. The diverse population and needs of students leads to a high occurrence of discipline referrals and behavioral problems. A school spirit store will promote good behavior as well as provide understanding of operations of a "business", interpersonal skills and planning. All around this project will bring positive things to the school at large. Although, we do not have much financial wealth, we are truly wealthy in a great group of teachers dedicated to making an impact on our students. We are a team and we have risen above odds when it comes to making the most of what we have.

My Project

My idea of a school store came from a student. She is new to the district and came to me one day comparing her old larger school to this school. She asked why we did not have a school store. This student came with a troubled past, behavioral record and poor academic record. Here, she has risen above that paper work reputation and has truly demonstrated success in academics as well as behavior. She in many cases stepped into a leader role! I asked permission of my principal and supervisor to begin this project both of which completely supported and encouraged my efforts. I have distributed surveys to weigh student as well as teacher opinions about a school store and have received nothing but positive comments. Many students beamed with excitement and inquiry about something new coming, it was a great feeling. The addition of "school money" will promote the shopping of students who EARN the "money" to spend. Promoting good work and behavior really does "pay off".

By creating this school store, I hope to see three main accomplishments.

I hope to instill in this group of students the value hard work, increase school spirit through recognized positive behavior and provide an opportunity to learn and grow outside the traditional classroom.
