Book Preview Station: Bringing Books to Life

My students need a new computer station to browse the library's catalog and watch book trailers to help them choose books to read.

My Students

The world of young adult literature is ever growing and students often need help finding a book to read that suits them. Teens look to each other to recommend books and book trailers (similar to movie trailers) are a way for students to see what other students are reading.

I am a library media specialist at a public high school that serves predominately middle class, blue collar families.

There is not a lot of family emphasis on going to college for most of our kids. Our school, and district, has made it a goal to prepare our kids for college and to give them the encouragement they need to move them forward.

My Project

I am requesting a touchscreen multi-media computer station. The station will be used to display the booktalks and book trailers that my students have created. An online booktalk or trailer is a multimedia book report that works like a movie trailer. Students utilize their voices, pictures and music to explain a book. Examples of digital booktalks can be found at http://digitalbooktalk.com/ Currently, our library has no multimedia computers and all students must sign into a computer before they can even find the booktalks online. An "always-on" station where they can watch and hear the book trailers, then use the online catalog to find the books would greatly increase interest in reading books at our school. I've requested an all-in-one computer with wireless because space and internet connections are limited.

Most students in high school are overloaded with homework and required reading.

They see the library as a place to come and use the computers and completely overlook books. I want to entice them to check-out books by letting them see that there are great choices for leisure reading. Your help will turn more students into life-long readers and library users. By using multi-media presentations, students will be lured into seeing books as a viable alternative to TV and the Internet.
