Freedom Through Reading: Freedom Writers' Diary

My students need a classroom set of the Freedom Writers Diary and teacher guide to help get them motivated to read and write.

My Students

President John F. Kennedy once said, "the stories of past courage can offer hope and provide inspiration. But they cannot supply courage itself. For this, each man must look into his own soul."

READ 180 is an intensive reading intervention for students who read about 2 years below grade level.

My students live and attend school in a high poverty area of Tennessee. Many of these 9th grade students fall in the high-need category and receive free or reduced cost lunches at school.

My Project

Research indicates that reading motivation directly correlates with reading achievement. What is more motivating than reading about a situation similar to your own in which the main character overcomes and succeeds? Because of the lives my students are faced with daily, I believe they would relate to the stories in the Freedom Writers' Diary.

I plan to use the Freedom Writers' Diary as a daily read aloud with my students.

Overtime, they will look forward to those moments we will share everyday. I hope my students will be more motivated to read and will also be more motivated to be productive citizens.
