Don't you love to see pictures of yourself? My students do! They are always taking pictures of themselves and their friends. They love being able to see the pictures they take instantly. In class, we have many opportunities to take pictures, but I don't always have ready access to a camera.
My students are the typical teenage kids.
Most of them love being the center of attention, and they love being able to "show out" when it comes to their abilities. Even those who are a little more timid still love having someone to brag on them.
Our community setting is by no means urban. Suburban doesn't even come close, and yet it really isn't rural, either. For many years, we had a thriving industry, but over the last 15 years, that industry has dwindled. Because of that, the demographics of our school have been affected in a rather negative way in regards to socio-economic status. However, we are the only high school in our district which makes us a fairly large school.
My Project
In my English classes, students regularly work on individual and group projects. By having access to a digital camera, students would be able to incorporate actual photos into those projects instead of having to depend on finding something in a magazine or from an online image search. Not only that, but I would be able to take pictures of my students "in action," which they would love. Additionally, I would be able to take pictures of the finished products. I do keep examples of what is an A project and of what is not, but it is impossible to keep them forever because they become faded, worn, and dusty. By being able to capture a good photo, I would be able to show, via PowerPoint, many more examples of what I would like the students to accomplish.
I feel that the creativity of the students would be enhanced if they were able to incorporate actual photos into their projects.
If they are working on their projects for The Canterbury Tales, pictures from around the school would make it more fun, I think. Granted, I would have to be very careful about the use of the camera, but so many of them already have digital cameras of their own, I do not think there would be problems.
