My Students

Often I hear my students bragging, "I've never read a book." I hope it's not true but I want to change my students desire for reading. My plan is to offer high interest novels that students will enjoy reading. I will use literature circles so students will have a choice in what they read.

Our school has about 1,200 students with a high poverty rate.

I have a class of thirty one students in regular English. This particular class needs extra attention to meeting each student's needs. Many of my students have yet to pass a English class in high school.

My Project

Choice is very important to students. My plan is to use Literature Circles where students will choose from six different novels, read and discuss those novels as small groups. The novels I have chosen are engaging and are not "the classics" as my particular group of students would better benefit from books that they can relate to. I have used Literature Circles before and have found great success when there are a variety of books to choose from.

Reading is so important.

The more books that are in a child's house, the more likely the student will be successful. My hope is that I will make readers out of non-readers and they will pass their love of reading onto their children.
