My Students

Many of my students are very reluctant readers. Some read Tears of a Tiger and fell in love with it. We are reading it as a class project, and we would love to read the others in the trilogy. I love watching students who haven't picked up a book for years spend the hour engrossed in a novel.

My students live in a very rural high poverty area.

We have a high enrollment of Native American students. The picture I provided was taken by one of my photography students in our after school program. Many families in our school district struggle to provide adequate food and clothing for their children. We work hard as a staff to see that the basic needs of our students are met, as well as helping them to seek further educational opportunities. Many of our students further their education past high school. Our school is very small, rural, and high poverty, but we have lots of love and a very dedicated staff. I am one of five nationally certified teachers on our very small staff.

My Project

Helping students become better and more interested readers can open new possibilities to every one of them. This novel is inspiring kids who normally never crack a book to become engrossed in the story of the trials of these young men. Through this donation, I hope to continue their drive to read.

The desire to read often declines in high school years when students get involved in more after school activities, a more active social life, and often jobs.

My students are reading, and I want to encourage them to continue. Telling them I don't have the other books in the trilogy for them to read breaks my heart.
