My Students

In 1989, Arthur Applebee did a study of novels and plays taught in high school English programs. In my school, of the six most common American writings, only To Kill a Mockingbird is taught. This leaves my students at a distinct disadvantage upon graduation.

My students enter high school rich with energy, but poor in cultural knowledge.

Much of this is due to their environment, not their willingness to learn. For many of them, my classroom is one of the last places they will read novels, poetry and plays.

My Project

These simple, yet profound books--Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby--say more about where our nation has been (and where we are going) than any other pairing of American writings. References to these works permeate our daily lives.

The knowledge from reading and analyzing these two powerful novels will make a life long impact on my students' interest and understanding of American society.

How we learn is aided through the building blocks of what we already know. By omitting these two important novels, we are denying access to two powerful cultural pillars.
