My Students

How do you enrich a camping experience through literature? By reading about a young man who is, just like you, facing the challenge and adventure of the outdoors.

The students are, unfortunately, limited in this digital world and this school of technology.

For as much access to information as they have, they have no concept of the beauty and awesomeness of the outdoors (even though many of them live in rural areas). They have no idea how to fend for themselves, not only in the great outdoors, but in general resourcefulness escapes them. Most importantly, though, these students do not know yet how to LOVE literature.

My Project

I am requesting 40 copies of the novel, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. This is an incredibly inspiring story of a young man who is tired of his life in the city and ventures out to live on his own, off the land in the Catskill mountains. The story chronicles his journey and, sometimes his peril, as he attempts to make it on his own through the cold Catskill winter with nothing but his wit, skill and intuition.

As an English literature teacher it is vitally important that I foster a love of reading in my students: My Side of the Mountain is a perfect way to get students started.

As part of our 8th grade team, it is my job to connect what we do in the classroom to our annual camping trip: My Side of the Mountain accomplishes that. I want my students to have access to a novel that allows me to monitor and facilitate real conversation, enrichment and integration: My Side of the Mountain does it all.
