My Students

I was not allowed to think about going to college because we were too poor. I became inspired to do so at a young age. I want my inner-city students to foster an independent spirit to know that they are smart enough to go to college, too.

I teach Kindergarten in an inner-city location.

Our school is comprised of white, African-American and Hispanic students who are on free lunch and free textbooks. Sometimes it is too dangerous for us to go out on our playground. Our parents want the best for their children. So, it is easy for me to plant the seed of their child being smart enough to attend college. Many of our parents are uneducated and have not thought about this opportunity. We maintain a belief that "It is you-not your environment, that decides your future". I speak daily about how gifted they are, how they will be ready for college, and what college will offer them for their future. I inspire them to be independent thinkers and to take charge of their own learning. I inspire them to dream big when it comes to their heart's desire. Our mantra is "We're so smart, we're going to college!"

My Project

Inner city students love materials that are cute, colorful and fancy. When I watch them use similar materials, it is like Christmas morning! They become so animated with delight and are happy to play learning games over and over again. My Kindergarten students love to say their Blends and Digraphs, but are having difficulty associating the L, R, or S Blend with an object. The Beginning Blends & Digraphs Instant Learning Center will provide the cutest way to do this. The set has 4 cupcake style pans that have the Blend or Digraph in the bottom. Students put the correct picture in the cupcake bottom. There are 4 cupcake pans (one for each student in a learning center) and 48 pictures to match the picture with the blend/digraph. Part of successful reading is hearing sounds in words. The Syllable Count is colorful and has several activity mats to match picture with syllable count. Along with hearing sounds is the Listen and Learn Word Family Program which will foster independence in knowing word families. Fun!

A "Can Do" attitude is the foundation to their journey to higher education.

Students that can use reading centers independently, empower themselves in their own learning. Please be the "Will Do" component of our efforts to catapult Kindergarten students to a successful journey to college. I am the hands and feet of someone who can help implement the supplies. You can be the hands and feet of someone who has inspired an inner light to their future.
