This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Love! Revenge! Mistaken identities! My students are about to encounter one of Shakespeare's most entertaining (and potentially confusing) comedies. Please help bring Shakespeare to us by donating 73 copies of the parallel-text version of A Midsummer Night's Dream!

My students will first read Romeo and Juliet from our textbook.

We will study the language, perform class readings, watch different film versions, and ultimately stage a 9th grade showing. We will reinforce narrative structure and learn new literary terms, including dramatic irony, soliloquy, and monologue. Our work with the famous tragedy will prepare us for a more independent reading of A Midsummer Night's Dream. We are a 9th grade English class in a DC Public School. Our class is made up of students of varied reading levels, with the majority 1-2 grades below reading level. We also have many English Language Learners, students from El Salvador to Laos. Our encounter with Shakespeare will challenge us all. My students love to be active and will enthusiastically embrace the chance to bring Shakespeare's words to life and connect his timeless themes to our 2010 daily lives.

My Project

These texts will allow students to take Shakespeare home to independently practice their reading skills. These texts will challenge students and bring us closer to our year-long goal of each student jumping 2 reading levels. The parallel-text will be especially helpful as an entry-point and will serve to clarify some of the more difficult language.

Introducing Shakespeare to 9th grade students is always an exciting journey.

Please help us jump into the world of Theseus, Helena, Oberon, Titania, Bottom, and, of course, Puck!
