My Students

What exactly is a food chain? That is a question my fourth graders always ask when we start our unit on energy sources in ecosystems. Inevitably, they confuse it with a food pyramid.

I am a science cluster teacher in a high-needs elementary school in New York.

All of our students qualify for reduced or free lunch. Most of my students have no prior knowledge when it comes to scientific concepts. Therefore,it is very hard for them to absorb and retain many of the science facts they are required to learn in elementary school. I try to involve them in many hands-on activities that are associated with the topics at hand. Despite this, the food chain is one that gives them some trouble.

My Project

When I taught as a science leave replacement teacher, I saw how involved and engaged the fourth grade students were when taking part in owl pellet dissections. I have always wanted to do this in my current school, however, budget constraints have prevented me from doing so. I am hoping that through DonorsChoose, I will be able to bring this great activity to my current fourth graders.

I see in practice how inquiry-based, hands-on lessons bring another dimension to my classes.

I also see how, when more effort and thought is put into truly engaging my students in science activities, science becomes more real to them. As a result, they enjoy the class more and better yet, they remember what they experienced. The owl pellet dissection activity will be one they will never forget!
