My Students

My class is a team taught classroom with 28 bright minds and two teachers.

The majority of my students come into the classroom reading one to two grade levels below third grade. Unfortunately many of our students don't have access to the public library because they do not have a way to get there. They do not have "a lovely bookshelf on the wall" at their home. Getting them excited to read can sometimes be very challenging. They would rather spend their time in front of the T.V. playing video games.

My Project

I try to inspire them to read everyday. The Leap Pad Quantum, by Leap Frog, is a personal and interactive educational technology that will give learners engaging and interactive instruction. It will allow struggling and unmotivated readers to gain some success and confidence in themselves. My goal is that it will ultimately get students more involved and excited about reading, and at the same time, increase their reading fluency and comprehension.

Each morning my students repeat this saying: I am somebody, I am special, I can learn anything, I can be anything I want to be.

I continue to remind them that anything is possible with hard work. They aspire to someday be teachers, police officers, doctors, astronauts, and scientists. They can only become these amazing future leaders, if they can read. I want to help them build "their lovely bookshelf on the wall."
