6 students to Washington D.C. with Close Up!

My students need 6 funded trips to Washington DC with the Close Up program.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach Science to a wonderful group of 7th grade students. They are motivated, curious, thoughtful, and energetic. Unfortunately, many of them do not have the resources to access experiences outside of their immediate community - let alone the state of California.

In 8th grade History students begin to study the legislative process, democracy, and the history of the United States.

I cannot think of a better way for students to build their prior knowledge than to visit our nation's capital. This experience will greatly benefit my students for years to come as they enter high school and eventually become registered voters themselves.

My Project

With the Close Up Foundation my students will learn the basic concepts of the federal government - including democracy, separation of powers, and the legislative process. They will also analyze the documents that outline the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Finally, the students will analyze the various ways that citizens and policy-makers interact to shape our nation. Our school is in a low-income community where most students do not have the means to travel across the country. This trip will not only broaden their understanding of our government and country as a whole - but it will give these students a chance to step outside of themselves and interact with students from all over the country.

You can make it possible for six students to have the experience of a lifetime.

Washington D.C. is not a place that most of my students ever dreamed of visiting - and you can make this dream a reality!
