My Students

I do not have literature within my classroom that reflects the diverse demographics of my students. Help my students read a classic that they can relate to and learn from.

I currently teach English at a challenging college prep school where almost all of the students go on to a four-year institution.

The students are great because they want to learn, they want to know about history and why things are they way they are.

My Project

Great literature has the power to change our lives and our understanding of history and who we are. Richard Wright’s classic "Black Boy" stands as one of those rare books that has the power to do that. Black Boy offers students an unflinchingly genuine perspective of growing up Black in mid-20th Century America. Most students across America learn about the history of this country in the context of wars and politics; Wright's autobiography will allow my students to better understand (or to understand for the first time) the personal experience of an African-American during one of the most historically-rich times this country has faced. By interacting with this text, my students, the majority of whom are African-American, will gain a stronger sense of the struggles and triumphs of people just like them, decades removed. Understanding Black Boy alongside my students' own experiences can strengthen their own senses of self in a way that history alone cannot.

I need 21 copies of "Black Boy" so I can introduce the book to my freshmen next year.

It’s a book that everyone should read at least once in his or her lifetime. The book will prepare them for college by giving them a rich history of America and show them what growing up in the South during the 1940s was like for a black male.
