Meeting the Challenge

My students need 6 sets of 6 challenging books to read in small groups.

My Students

I love teaching First Grade. Reading is our main focus and the growth that I see in one year is amazing! As I focus on those kids who need the strategic intervention, I don't want to neglect the needs of my independent readers. They need more books to help them continue to grow as readers.

My students are eager first graders who live in a small town in Oregon.

They come from varying backgrounds, but all share a love of reading. They love stories that they can connect with, laugh with and cry with. I have quite a few students who are reading above grade level and are always looking for a good chapter book to read with their classmates. We just don't have sets for them to read together in their small strategy groups.

My Project

We are working hard to become the strong readers. My students needs vary from intensive intervention to above grade level. I have made progress in gathering materials to meet the needs of those students who are below grade level in reading, but I am lacking in books for those who are independent readers. I understand how important it is to bring all of my students up to grade level, but don’t want to neglect those who are in need of a challenge. My students need sets of challenging books to read in small groups. These strong readers would use these books in small "book clubs" working on their fluency, comprehension and vocabulary skills.

At this point, my above level readers are reading independently instead of with their classmates.

With your generous donation, I am hoping to acquire sets of books for those students who are ready to read chapter books and work together on their comprehension and vocabulary skills.
