Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students love music classes, but the school budget and the parent income levels do not allow every child to have access to a musical instrument. These recorders (flutophones) will give them the chance to feel the music in themselves come alive in our weekly classes.

Our school serves an inner city community which is made up of predominantly Hispanic immigrants from Mexico and Central America, and African American families which have lived here in California for several generations.

There is also a very small number of Korean students. We are a K through 8 public school with an enrollment of about 1700 students. We have just been awarded a new elementary school by our district based on the high quality of the plan we wrote for it. We competed against several charter organizations in order to qualify for the new school. Our plan was deemed the best, and one of it's elements is a music program. We would like Education Through Music to provide the instruction for it. We will remain at our current K through 8 school until the end of this academic year, then move to the new school which is only a few blocks away at the beginning of the 2010/2011 school year. The instruments we are requesting will travel with us to the new elementary site.

My Project

Our 3rd grade students are the pilot stage of our music program. The kids love the classes we hold in each teacher's room during the week. Their enthusiasm is moving, as is the energy and skill of our Education Through Music instructor. Unfortunately, due to the massive budget cuts we are experiencing in California, we don't have the funds to buy the instruments (in this case woodwind recorders) the students need to personally feel the thrill of playing an instrument and making music. In this community, school is the only opportunity most of our students have to learn the fundamentals of music and feel the joy we can experience by making music. Our city's education system does not fund regular music instruction for our students. Education Through Music and your donation is making it possible to surmount this obstacle to their artistic development. Our intention is to expand our partnership with ETM to offer music instruction to all elementary grades at the new school.

When I was a child, my access to music and music instruction was extremely limited, at home and at school.

If you can imagine what that lack is like, or have experienced it yourself and wished you'd had the chance to learn an instrument and how to sing.... then you know how important your donations will be.
