Experiencing Life Through Dramatic Play

My Students

Do you remember pretending to be a doctor, teacher, or astronaut, when you were younger? How about doing the dishes or pretending to go grocery shopping? My students have the opportunity to learn about and role play a variety of life experiences, to better prepare them for their futures.

I teach in a low-income, urban school, and would love to give my students as many life experiences as possible.

My outgoing students love to role play different scenarios and careers, including taking care of babies, grocery shopping, or pretending to be a construction worker, police officer, and firefighter. My students are very inquisitive about different life experiences, and I would like for them to have the opportunities to role play these in the classroom.

My Project

Unfortunately, our classroom does not have adequate Dramatic Play materials for our students to use. We have basic dress-up clothes, baby dolls, play dishes, and food, all of which are old and becoming unusable. My students would greatly benefit from these new Dramatic Play materials. With new career costumes, multicultural dolls, housekeeping materials, play dishes and food, writing boxes, and tools, my students will be given many different opportunities to explore life experiences. With these resources, my students will have a better chance at meeting the assessment goals set for them. These experiences will also help build essential conversation skills, understanding of different careers, household responsibilities, writing development, and more!
