Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ever since we started reading chapter books in my class, their view on reading has changed considerably. They are engaged, excited and don't want to stop reading.

I teach 22 wonderful 3rd graders in a low socioeconomic status (SES) neighborhood with many gangs nearby in Southern California.

Many of them like to read, but do not have books at home. Others are unaware of where the library is located nearby. The school that I work at has been in program improvement (PI) status for more than 5 years due to our English Language Arts scores. My students are very bright, but do not have the exposure they need to be proficient readers.

My Project

My students should be reading chapter books; however, many of my students are hesitant to start because they are "too long" or "do not have pictures". Some will start a book, but then never read past the first chapter. To encourage my students to give chapter books a chance, I have read two different chapter books with them as a class. My students love reading these books, a stark contrast to the other reading we must do. They are more engaged, will take the books home to try to read ahead, and pay attention more to their readings. I have requested class sets of 3 different chapter books to continue this practice of reading in class. I chose Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because most of my students are familiar with the book, and I want them to see where the ideas came from. I also chose Ramona the Pest and Nate the Great because they are the first books in series. I hope that students will continue reading the series after we finish reading.

As the year has progressed, I have noticed that a few of my students now choose chapter books when we visit the class library.

There are still many, however, that always want to go for books they find easy. I hope that with more exposure to chapter books, they will not find them as daunting and start to love reading.
