My Students: When you think back to when you went to school, what lesson stands out most? Isn't it amazing how you can still remember that trick to simplify fractions? Or how to remember whether to use "affect" or "effect"? I would like my students to not just memorize math concepts, but to internalize them.

Most of my students have grown up in poverty in a small town in rural Mississippi. But for being dealt such a tough hand, they are amazingly resilient, good-hearted, optimistic, confident, and determined. They strive for success in academics, athletics, and in extracurricular activities. Most of my students hope to continue their education after graduating from high school by attending universities or trade schools or enlisting in the armed forces.

My Project: With all of its notation, laws, postulates, and formulas, Geometry can be a very abstract subject to understand. An LCD projector can greatly enhance the learning experience in our classroom by helping students visualize what is being taught. We would discover the "why" behind concepts dealing with lines, angles, and shapes (both two- and three-dimensional), and not just the "what".

This project is very important for my students to get a firm grasp of skills that can be applied in numerous positions and situations. It will help ensure that my students are internalizing mathematical concepts so that they can be recalled for years to come. hide»

Dear Larry Ladd/ JRL Foundation Littleton Co.,

I cannot begin to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you for your generosity and compassion toward my students and my school. On the surface, your donation has given a math classroom a much-needed LCD projector. But more than that, you have allowed my students to broaden their conceptual understanding of often-times difficult subject matter - a skill that will be useful in innumerable real-world situations beyond just geometry.

Since we received the projector, our class has been able to:
1. View 3-dimensional shapes clearly.
2. Understand linear and angular velocity with the help of models and diagrams.
3. Magnify calculator operations so that everyone in the class can see.
4. Set up and solve problems involving triangle congruency and similarity.
5. Actually understand the shapes and figures on the board rather than having students decipher my "drawings."

The amazing thing is that we did all of this in only a month! I cannot wait until next year when I can incorporate the projector into many more lessons, and I'm sure my students next year will be excited as well.

Once again, thank you so much for your kindness. I appreciate it, my school appreciates it, and, most importantly, my students appreciate it.

With gratitude,
Mr. Bergeron

Dear Larry Ladd/ JRL Foundation Littleton Co.,

I cannot begin to thank you enough for your generous donation to this cause. Having a projector in the classroom will greatly benefit all of my students, who have thus far had to deal with my hand-drawn shapes and figures. Now we will be able to take geometry to the next level by incorporating real-world situations, scale diagrams, and example problems - all of which would most certainly not fit on my whiteboard!

I hope to instill upon my students the same values of selfishness and generosity that you have displayed. Thank you sincerely once more!

With gratitude,
Mr. B
