My Students: I teach all day Kindergarten to non-English speaking children who are just learning how to read and write our language. Learning how to use the skills of reading and writing will open up a whole new world to these young students and brighten their future.

My kids try hard (but don't get help from home) and they are learning the basics from the books the school district provides. I want to take them beyond the basics by encouraging them to put their writing and reading skills to practice by implementing the "Writing Our Way to the Post Office" Project in our Kindergarten Classrooms. In order for our children to reach the national average, we have to work twice as hard because they come to us extremely low at the beginning of Kindergarten.

Our school is in an impoverished area and the students are not provided with much at home, so as teachers we have to provide our student with all of the extras beyond the paper and pencil activities.

My Project: "Writing Our Way to the Post Office" will empower our children to write letters to their peers in their classroom and in their neighbor Kinder classroom. These letters will be "mailed" by placing them in our new Classroom Mailbox. Each day our classroom helper will also be the "Postal Helper" of the day and sort and deliver the mail into our new Mail Boxes. There will be time each day devoted to reading and responding to our mail.

All students will be involved in writing, reading, delivering, sorting and enjoying the gift of writing for a purpose!

Help my classroom become more than just textbook readers and writers. Help them see the purpose in writing by giving them a purpose to write and respond to others by ..."writing their way to the post office" so they can receive a letter in return and read it and want to write back!

This will empower them to be lifelong writers and readers! hide»

Dear Julie, the Berkels, Audrey, nancy, Mariel, Katya, Lori, Erica, katie, Esta, Suzanne, Michael and Anonymous Donors,

I can't fully express my excitement and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. In reading and writing, we so often use just textbooks to teach children, but as you can see I want to do much more than that with these grant funds to help me!

The tools that you have funded will enable students to create and write their own letters and this will help them with their writing and reading skills. In addition, I will be able to demonstrate and model writing skills through letter writing lessons.

Thank you again! I can't wait to introduce these new grant tools to the children!

With gratitude,
Mrs. S.
