I want to hook reluctant high school readers! I teach 9th grade English in New York in a small, somewhat rural community. With state budget cuts in educational funding looming on the horizon, I am seeking help from DonorsChoose.

MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, PlayStation, XBOX! High School students spend countless hours using these websites and gaming systems. Where have all the books disappeared to? Within my English classroom, I provide my students with a comprehensive selection of literary titles such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Fahrenheit 451, and Animal Farm. Although appropriate and challenging, not all students are "hooked" by the content. I'd like to show my students that there are alternatives to sitting in front of a monitor or screen. A "high interest" read could make this possible.

In an effort to reach all of my students, I'd like to incorporate some young adult literary titles into my classroom that have been described as "high interest" reads. I am requesting 35 copies of the young adult novel "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. By starting with just one title, (which is the first of a three part series), I hope to engage not just the reluctant readers, but all of my students. The more students read, the more educated they become.

Help me reach even the most reluctant readers by putting a "high interest" novel into their hands. This would be a great experience for them that could foster a lifelong interest in reading all types of literature.
