Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Critical thinking and solving puzzles need to go beyond the regular classroom. My students who are active in Chess Club need experience with word puzzles as well.

My middle school Chess Club had up to 25 students playing chess at any given meeting last year. Students this year have been excited to get the club started again. My principal is asking to expand the club to include word games such as scrabble. The chess boards were my own donation, but I do not have the means to provide Scrabble sets.

I will need 5 Scrabble boards to use with my ten Chess boards to enhance my after school club. My students have been building vocabulary through repeated exposure to tier II and tier III words, an extended day to included daily writing class, and daily exposure to Latin and Greek roots. I believe Scrabble will encourage students to learn and use even more words.

Your help will provide my students with enriching after school activity, help develop a community for students who do not participate in other extracurricular groups, and will aid the development of reading comprehension and spelling skills for a wide range of middle school students.
