News flash! 80% of our daily reading is non-fiction. Finding the right reading material for “tweenaged” boys and girls who are struggling readers is a challenge.

What better way to pull in my readers than by providing teen-friendly current events?

Non-fiction teen magazines provide illustrations and short articles that make reading enjoyable for struggling readers. As a special education teacher, my heart breaks every time I see a frustrated reader abandon a novel after feeling overwhelmed by the amount of text and high level vocabulary.

My Project

Current event magazines have short text that makes it manageable for children to practice non-fiction reading strategies. After teaching a mini lesson about overcoming an obstacle in non-fiction reading, I need interesting and short pieces of text for my students to apply the strategy to. Peer partner reading is a successful strategy when teaching pre-teens, therefore, I need ten subscriptions for each current event magazine.

You will make it possible for our next generation of passionate learners to become life long readers by donating current event magazines to our classroom library.

Your donation of ten subscriptions will give students the opportunity to have their very own magazine to take home with them each month and read with their family!
