My classroom focuses on engaging learning that is skill-based, relevant,and deep, rather than learning that focuses solely on coverage. In my 12th grade American Government class, I seek to build non-AP students into critical thinkers who are prepared to become reflecting and engaging citizens in our democracy.

My students have expressed a deep curiosity for issues confronting our election system, such as voter turnout and campaign finance. However, the materials we have cover this information in a superficial manner that prevents students from developing a well-developed position on them.

My students need a strong selection of books covering current issues, such as voter rights and redistricting, in elections and campaigns. We need books that go beyond the textbook in coverage of these issues. The students can utilize these to enhance their reading skills as they confront more challenging texts; in addition, their research skills become stronger as they use these to incorporate findings into their student-developed projects. For the students, I can use these to identify appropriate readings for students and to incorporate in-depth content into my lesson plans.
