The Power of Math: Increasing Student Numeracy with Numb3rs

My students need the television show "Numb3rs" Seasons 1-5 on DVD.

Albert Einstein once stated that “Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” This has always been my personal experience with numbers, a connection between the logic of ideas and poetry. However, I work with students in Algebra I at a college-prep charter high school that have developed fear and anger towards mathematics who are now in a course in school that requires them to work with numbers. However, I have read the studies and seen the data that indicates the greatest factor that relates to students reaching college and being successful once they get there is mathematical competence. And, I see my job one as preparing each and every one of my students for college. I refuse to settle when it comes to the future success of my students. While I am determined to guide my students through the perilous waters of Algebra I, I am currently unable to receive any money for additional resources to support my students due to the dire cutbacks in the educational funding available to my school. I need resources that will be able to inspire my students, while simultaneously building skills and creating a foundation of understanding. My students need to be supported, and as much as it pains me to admit it, I can’t do all by myself. If the television series "Numb3rs" on DVD is purchased for my students, they will be able to more effectively build the mathematical foundation of understanding to successfully complete the college-prep Algebra I courses I teach. This will happen because they this show illustrates the power and usefulness of math. This television show will improve the degree to which my students can meet math standards and persist on the way to college because they will finally be able to get over their fear and anger towards numbers and math. And when that happens, the skills that my courses develop are going to be fundamental if my students are going to be successful on mandatory state tests, as well as pre-university assessments such as the SAT & ACT tests. Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein proclaimed, “…I can only climb slowly up the mountain of mathematics.” This is the situation of my students as they confront the rigor and challenge of college-prep Algebra. They are moving forward, slowly. But, if you are able to support this project, you will be speeding up the process as my students continue on through my course and ever onward towards graduation and the gates of college.
