Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach geometry to students in a night school setting. These are students who, in one way or another, could not graduate high school in four years and are working diligently in getting their high school diplomas. They are pleasant young adults who wish to go to college and improve their ways of life.

Unfortunately, the program is lacking resources and could not afford essential supplies, such as rulers, compasses and protractors for my students. These are tools that are essential in understanding geometry and my students are in a bind in being able to truly understand the material.

Class sets of compasses and protractors will make it possible for my students to learn geometry, for they will enable my students to investigate the properties of shapes through measurement and conjecture. This is much better than giving students lists of definitions and formulas and having them apply the algorithm to something that is abstract and difficult to understand. Furthermore, geometry manipulatives, such as tangrams and grid boards, will enhance their learning experience by making mathematics more "hands-on" as these students attempt to get their high school diplomas and prepare for college.

These students need a chance to graduate! Your help will reinforce the idea that ALL students have a right to an education. These young men and women choose to attend school at night in order to graduate sooner--please help make that happen!
