I teach at a relatively rural school in North Carolina. My classroom serves children with a variety of needs. It is truly an inclusive environment. I have 25 students on a variety of levels ranging from students with learning disabilities to students who perform high above grade level expectations. We live in a blue-collar community that has been especially hard hit by unemployment and we are seeing needs that we have not seen before come to the surface.

60% of the passages on North Carolina's End of Grade Tests are nonfiction passages, yet less than 10% of the reading resources available to students in my classroom are nonfiction. I need help to changes this! My students love to learn and thoroughly enjoy exciting nonfiction but their choices in the classroom are incredibly limited- especially for those not right at a 4th grade level.

This can easily be solved by helping provide nonfiction texts that reach to students at a variety of reading levels. Greater access to nonfiction texts has been linked to higher achievement on standardized testing. Fund this project and help enable my students to gain reading skills necessary to succeed.

This project has the potential to unlock innumerable opportunities for the students in my class this year and years to come by providing them a wealth of knowledge and learning opportunities.
