I teach 9th and 10th grade English in a very rural school district in New York. With the recent budget cuts the state has made, my school is unable to provide me with the class sets of books that I use to teach my students to read and love literature. I would love to be able to teach Lois Lowry's "The giver" to my students, but again, can't afford the books. Fifty (50) copies of the book, preferably all the same edition, would enable me to teach this wonderful and exciting piece of literature that is full of lessons and morals important to students growing up in today's culture. "The Giver" would be taught in my 9th grade class, and fits into the theme of "the hero's journey." Throughout the year I will be examining the nature of heroics, and how a person can come from an ordinary background and still manage to do extraordinary things. In addition to the values taught in the book, it is an excellent piece of literature that everyone should read. As opposed to some of the other classics you might have read in your own English class, "The Giver" is very easy for kids to connect to, and is exciting to read. Thank you for your consideration.
