Believe it or not, my public high schools students and I built a theater in 2009,and we did it completely on donations. I teach high school in a small town in Mississippi. My theater class has students from all four grades. My school district has been hit hard financially. Recently teachers were told that next year our district will teach 1,000 additional kids with 25 million dollars less money.

We are the only school in our public school district without a theater. After 15 years of waiting for one to be built, my students and I decided we would take a large room that we were finally given to practice in and turn that room into a black-box theater. After spending the entire summer building and painting and sewing, we recently had our first play and were extremely successful. Our first play has been nominated for 18 awards from a local alliance that reviews performances in our part of the state.

Through donations, we had plenty of mics and enough lighting ror that particular play. Now my students are eager for more and want to do a musical. If we could receive 7 LED lights, we would have enough to perform a musical version of Cinderella. Our ballroom scene, even on our small stage, would look spectacular! The needed lights would also allow more kids to become involved because we need extras to sing and dance in the crowd scene.

With your help, I will be able to teach my students lighting techniques as well as how to participate in a show with a large cast. This is so important because I have four seniors who want to major in theater in college, and they need to experience musical theater. These seniors will soon be preparing pieces for college auditions and really need the opportunity to develop a wide range of talents. Scholarships will be the only they can hope to go to college, and they have a much better chance at receiving on if they can add musical theater to their list of credits. I also have 3 students that love doing tech work. If I can add these lights to the two I already have, they will gain experience with operating a more sophisticated light board.
