Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 6th grade students come from a low income neighborhood, most from other countries. Most of them have never seen the night sky through a telescope.

What better way to teach the students about the constellations, the moon, Saturn's rings, Jupiter, and the night sky than to have a star party. We have scheduled many of them with a planetarium, but because of clouds or bad weather we have to cancel each time. We also have to schedule months in advance to be on their schedule.

If we had our own telescope, we could have a star party whenever we wanted. We could watch the forecast and decide during the week that Friday night looks good for star gazing. We would no longer have to plan a star party three months in advance and hope for good weather. Having a telescope would enable us to teach the astronomy curriculum in real life and not just from a book.

Your donation would make our star party activity a reality. Our students would be able to gather on a Friday evenings with their parents to view the night sky. You could make a difference and possibly spark the interest of a future astronomer.
