My students need a bus to transport them from our school to the UC Berkeley so that they can explore their first college campus and begin a track towards college!
Our 7th grade students live in a high poverty district. Many of their parents did not go to college nor even finish high school. Subsequently, "college" is an abstract idea for our students that has been constantly driven into their brains, yet has no real meaning.
Our school funds for providing field trips and opportunities to get out of our city are extremely limited. As a result, college continues to be a word that adults keep referring to but nothing more. Since students are not under pressure to graduate and receive a diploma, they are unable to understand how hard work now can lead to opportunities for success later.
Our students need to understand what hard work and diligence can lead them to! We want to take our 7th graders on a tour at the University of California at Berkeley so that the concept of college becomes tangible. We want our 7th graders to meet college students and hear their stories about what it takes to make it to college. Finally, we want our students to see and hear the stories of current college students who come from similar communities so that they realize college can become a reality for them.
You have the opportunity to change the trajectory for 150 middle students who do not understand what college is and recognize that it is a place for them! Please help our students contextualize what their hard work now can ultimately lead to!
