Giving Autism A Chance

Washington, DC Grades PreK-2

I teach in a public school with a wonderful and active community in DC. My Kindergarten classroom is enriched with diversity from all over the world, and all different learning needs.

We are blessed to have a student with autism in our class. However his needs are not met with the same general education supplies we have. Our district has tried to move my student into a contained classroom in a different school, his parents think that his social progresses won't be met there. These materials will help this student to interact more effectively with his classmates, and provide him with the skills we all take for granted.

These materials are needed to facilitate my student with autism in amazing ways. A mirror can provide him a chance to interact with other children socially- something he lacks the skills for. A weighted vest will help him to be aware of his presence in the classroom. A disc-o seat will help him to able to sit in a chair like the rest of his classmates during morning journals! Lastly the zip and tie vest will help him to build muscles and skills he needs in everyday life!

These simple materials will provide this student and his family the opportunity for great success in our local school. Things we take for granted he has to work so hard at. You will be making a massive difference in a 5 year old's life long journey.
