From Page to Screen: Exciting Books & Movie Cameras

My students need 2 camcorders, a digital camera, and 54 shelf-ready library books on diverse subjects from philosophy to women writers to Latin American art.

The students in my library are dynamic readers and writers who want to be filmmakers as well. I work at an early college that encourages students to find their own paths to college success, which means that we help each student discover his or her unique talents. Many students have a gift with technology, the visual arts, and storytelling, and we want to cultivate these gifts.

My proposed project will help students find their wings as screen writers, directors, editors, set-designers and actors. The library is joining with several teachers to create a film festival based on students' favorite books in the library. Students are writing scripts based on their personal interests, which include philosophy, women authors, creativity, chess, vampires, and Latin American art. We have a notebook filled with book requests from students -- but an extremely limited budget with which to satisfy them. Our students are voracious readers, but sadly, the state only gives us $6.25 per student per school year. Research shows that students with high quality school libraries are more likely to get good grades, do well on standardized tests, and make it to college. In our innovative early college program, students earn both a high school diploma and an Associates degree (tuition-free!) This accelerated program greatly increases their chances of completing a 4-year college degree. However, our library budget may prevent students from gaining college-level research, reading and technology skills.

With two video cameras and one still camera, we can begin making films and photo galleries, spread interest in students' filmmaking on our school website, and document their memories in the school yearbook. Students will learn to write scripts, shoot, edit, and organize a film festival for the entire school community. Students carefully selected the 54 books requested in the proposal, combing through catalogs and websites, and they are eager to begin reading and making films. Here is a brief description of how some books will be used. --"Virginia Woolf: An Inner Life" (biography) and "Creative Habit: Learn It and Use it for Life" by Twyla Tharp, will help a student research a film about women writers and creativity. --"Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays" by Albert Camus will help a student create a fictional film based on Camus' philosophies. --"Beauty is Convulsive: The Passion of Frida Kahlo" and "Latin American Art" will help a student research Latin American artists. --"Ultimate Sports" will help a sports fan develop an engaging "how to" sports strategy film that draws on math and physics.

We are asking for a special request to use an independent bookstore in New York City that offers “shelf-ready service” to libraries. This means they do cataloging, labeling and plastic-covering so that the books are instantly ready to circulate. This service also makes the books more durable and longer-lasting, saving us money and saving trees. Because we are using a second-hand bookstore, we will receive books at half the cost, and we will receive twice as many as we would if we bought them new. We are hoping to fill the empty shelves of our fledgling library, and give literature a new life through film. The students are so excited to begin this project! Thanks for reading this proposal.
