Please Help my 10th-Grade Students Experience the Cold War

My students need 50 copies of "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank.

The Cold War, that conflict of ideologies that defined the years I grew up, may have gone dormant but it has not vanished. My 10th-graders know little of the fear that people of my generation experienced at such times as the Cuban Missile Crisis; the neon yellow Civil Defense shelter signs that used to adorn buildings downtown have faded into pastels. As years pass, even my students' collective memories of the attacks on September 11 are growing faint. (That's understandable. After all, those I teach now were just little children in 2001!) It's important for these young people to know that just because the Cold War has gone into hibernation, the world is not necessarily safe. There are still some who resent all the good that America represents. Reading this novel, a story of what might have happened had a nuclear war taken place, helps students understand the threat and appreciate their freedoms.

I have a classroom set of Pat Frank's novel (Alas, Babylon). When we are reading this book, I carry it with me from room to room on a cart. (I don't have the luxury of having my own dedicated classroom.) Students pick up a copy of the book and return it when they leave for their next class. Boys in particular seem to find this book fascinating, and often ask to borrow a copy, but because I have just one set, I am forced to decline their requests.

With another two classroom sets of Alas, Babylon (50 copies would work), I could be much more open to lending the books to students to take home. This would be especially helpful for those who are slow readers.

Alas, Babylon is what some critics call "science fiction" in that it attempts to portray a world in which the unthinkable has occurred. I think that the unthinkable (the nuclear war described in this book) has not taken place because people read books like this one and have taken steps to keep America strong. You can help me share this novel's message with students who will be tomorrow's leaders. Thank you in advance for doing so.
