Future Doctors Need Organs

My students need Humectant Fluid Concentrate, polyethylene gloves, and a selection of different animal organs including hearts, kidneys, brains, lungs, and eyes to dissect.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Are you curious what actually happens when you have a heart attack or why a common symptom of diabetes is extreme thirst? My students definitely are. I teach human anatomy and physiology to high school students in Washington DC. Despite the minority and low-income status of the majority of our students, our school is dedicated to preparing ALL of our students to go to college. The materials requested in this proposal are necessary to provide the rigorous and authentic science learning experiences my students need to inspire and prepare them to succeed in college-level science coursework. My students learn about the human body by studying the causes and effects of many common diseases such as cancer, AIDS, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. Many of my students are interested in pursuing careers in the health professions and all students are curious about how their body works. We can use the textbook and the Internet to see pictures of the organs that are being studied in class, but that is no replacement for being able to handle and explore real preserved organ samples. We need a selection of different organs including hearts, kidneys, brains, lungs, and eyes to dissect in order to learn about the human body. These materials will allow students to map the flow of blood through the heart to better understand what happens during a heart attack, explore the intricate structures of the kidney during our diabetes unit, and trace the path of visual information from the eye to the brain in our neuroscience unit. With your support my students can learn anatomy and physiology through rigorous and authentic inquiry-based learning. Please help my students to realize that they have the capacity to be the doctors and scientists of tomorrow.
