True Wisdom from our Elders!

My students need a manual binding machine and 200 binding spines to hold the biographies together.

At the present time, I am fortunate to teach three uniquely composed classes- one of which is advanced and one of which is a CTT (Collaborative Team Teaching) class. All of my students read and write on different levels, though many of them, especially those who are approaching grade-level standards, seek activities that will excite and motivate them!

Each year, New York State requires that students write a narrative either about themselves or about another person. In order to encourage students to not only exercise their writing skills, but also learn a great deal of wisdom from an older individual in their lives, I assign them a biography project. For this project, a great deal of work is involved. First, they learn questioning skills in order to write interview questions. Then, they choose an older person in their life who they feel would offer them knowledge and a different take on life. Next, they must interview that person and gather as much information as possible. Finally, they draft, revise, and publish a mini-biography about that person that they will share with the class and also gift to that person as a genuine "Thank You."

As hard as my students work every year on this biography project, what would make the published end result that much more amazing is if we had the opportunity to create actual mini-books out of the biographies. After completing the project and creating a personalized book cover, my students would utilize a binding machine and spines to create actual books! These creations would be amazing keepsakes for themselves as well as the wise, older person whom they interviewed.

With your generosity, you will not only promote literacy, but also show my students just how important their hard work is and how a tangible product makes such a huge impact in a person's life! What's better: handing the interviewee a beautifully-bound book...or a stapled packet? The answer is very clear and your donation will make it possible!!
