“You’re back!” “Yep. That’s number four for today.” “You’re paying attention in class aren't you?” “Oh, yeah. I think I’m setting a record of some kind. Has anyone else read more than four of the Naruto series in one day?” “Yes. Someone’s ahead of you with eight.” “Dang. Well, I want to check in these two and check out these two.” “Okey dokey. Goin’ for the record are you?” “Oh, yeah.” “That a boy.”

Popular doesn't even begin to describe the students’ opinion about manga and graphic novels. I’ve never seen anything quite like it during my years while serving as our high school’s librarian. And their corporate cry is “More.” Unfortunately, my library budget has been cut yet again this year; I now receive a quarter of what I did two years ago to serve a student body of approximately 1700 students, an amount that frightfully hovers at $1.75 per student. According to Roscello and Webster (2002, “Characteristics of School Library Media Programs and Classroom Collections: Talking Points”), one element of an effective school library is that a library “supports learning to read and reading to learn with informational and imaginative text and literature.” However, such support has become increasingly difficult over the past two years and next year offers yet another dismal picture of putting books into the hands of our students. And yet, research continues to attest to how reading-success is tantamount to student achievement.

Book availability is fundamental to student success, and graphic novels are a gateway to developing an interest in story. Special education and ELL students as well as college-bound students benefit from graphic novel availability. Mrs. D, who teaches junior AP English classes, required her students last semester to check out a graphic novel from the library (which students were able to do because of a grant from Donors Choose). At the end of January, she asked me if I would display a number of her students’ projects; students had adapted Miller’s The Crucible as a graphic novel, tweaking the setting to some 20th century event, McCarthyism, for example. Students have been browsing the projects displayed on the circulation desk counter, projects which promote the library’s collection of Shakespeare titles, biographies and works of fiction created in the graphic novel format. They are requesting more: “This series doesn't end at #27. Are you going to get the rest of them?” “Are there anymore Runaway books, Mr. F?” “Did you know that there’s a graphic novel of Shutter Island?” I asked one of my student aides. “Really?” she replied. “You should get it.”

Your support of this project will put books that demand metacognition into the hands of our students whether they be reluctant readers or college-bound, building upon a collection first made possible from generous donors. You will provide other teachers who now want to follow Mrs. D’s example with additional titles from student-recommended series. You will support a climate of responses like that of the one young man, a rabid graphic novel reader, who upon learning that I was at work to get more graphic novels donated, smiled from cheek to cheek and replied, “That would be so awesome.” You will be a super-hero.
