My amazing 9th graders love doing Punnett Squares during the genetics section of our Biology class. They are always excited to see if the offspring would be more likely to have blue eyes or brown eyes, full lips or thin lips, etc. The subject of quite a few CA state standards, genetics is a key section. My little biologists need to know how to predict probable outcomes of offspring (standard 4c) and know how to apply genetic coding rules to predict the sequence of amino acids from a sequence of codons in RNA (standard 4b). It sounds a bit confusing, right? That's where I, the teacher, come in doing very, very frequent checks for understanding is key.

Such frequent checks for understanding (CFUs) will ensure that my young biologists master the material and will ensure that not a single one of them gets lost in the crowd of students.

A classroom set of dry erase boards and the necessary supplies to utilize them (markers, erasers, etc) would ensure that frequent checks of understanding truly will be FREQUENT. Having dry erase boards will allow me to assess how well my students have mastered a topic by having them answer questions on the erase board and holding up their answers-- going deeper than any other quick CFU could do. This will improve the classroom environment, because the CFUs will become a fun game for individual students as well as for group work.

If this project gets sponsored, my young scientists will understand material better because of the ability to infuse the classroom with games and CFUs changes the whole learning environment. Photosynthesis will become clearer and more fun; so will cell respiration; not to mention genetics problems where misunderstanding can take place in key words, setting up crosses, or even the algebra itself. Your donation will empower students in ALL my 5 classes and all my future students in years to come. Please support our classroom-- until recently we did not even have a white board. Having individual dry erase boards for students will make the classroom interactive, fun, and one that promotes mastery to an even higher level.
