Pass The Internet, Please!

My students need two netbooks to have internet access in the classroom.

This is my first year teaching Biology in a Central Massachusetts school that is high in diversity and low in funding. Many of my students are taking Biology for a second time and it's obvious that they need a new, creative approach in order to get passionate about the science of life.

One day, I played a few clips from a Planet Earth DVD and MAGIC happened. I watched dozens of apathetic teenagers come to life, fascinated by the images of ocean life that they had never seen before. They asked questions, made comments, voiced opinions...demanded MORE! The problem is that my school has so few resources, and none oriented toward Marine Biology.

To keep my students motivated an challenged, I would like to spend the last two quarters of this school year teaching Biology with relation to marine life. Students will study using Marine Biology textbooks, magazines, Internet resources, video clips and hands on projects. We were recently gifted with textbooks from the donors of DonorsChoose.org (see "Let Me Sea" http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=364766) Now the students desperately need Internet access in the classroom. Many of the students have no internet access at home, the school does not have enough computers to supply every class with ample access and the one machine in my room cannot support the research of 18 students during a 50 minute class. We need the internet to supplement the books, to help the ELL students translate and, most of all, to teach the students how to find reliable scientific references online. Although they can navigate social websites, they lack the internet research skills that they absolutely must develop to be successful in college.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to actively learn using NetBooks that they can pass around the room, helping them access up-to-date information and become savvy Internet researchers. Thank you!
