A camera can photograph thought. ~Dirk Bogarde Hello, I am in my third year of teaching second grade in a district that is focused on formative assessment. Formative assessment is a tool that inspires teachers to use all types of assessment strategies to show learning and to teach.

One powerful type of assessment to show learning and excitement is through the use of pictures, which are added to student work samples.

My school does not have digital cameras to be used in the classrooms on a daily basis. I never know when a student will show learning that cannot be written about exactly. A digital camera would allow me to take pictures of small and large accomplishments, which I would add to their portfolios. Students who struggle with writing or testing would especially benefit because their accomplishments can be shown with pictures rather than writing. The digital pictures would also be shown at Open House and at conferences for parents to get a better understanding of what happens in the classroom each day.

My Project

Tests and written work are not the only ways students can prove that they are learning. Pictures can show amazing accomplishments in learning. An example of this can be taken from our science unit about insects. During our outside insect hunt, students discussed and observed different characteristics of insects. Their discussions were rich in facts and enthusiasm. I cannot capture that with a written test. Pictures show enthusiasm and details of learning opportunities.

A digital camera would capture ALL students’ small and large learning accomplishments, regardless of learning abilities.

Also, a digital camera would give parents and administrators a visual to see the learning and excitement during our day. With your generous donation, students who struggle with testing or writing would be seen in a different light. All students will be able to show their achievements and excitement for learning daily.
