Journalism is changing; everyone knows that. But society's need and thirst for information will not change, and so our understanding of what it means to be a journalist needs to change.

The students in this small, rural, high-poverty school have, in the last 2 years, staged a total turnaround of their newspaper and yearbook. They've begun creating a product that is timely, responsible, well-edited, and relevant to teens. Unfortunately, they've done so in a way more aligned to old media than new media. With your help, that's about to change.

To compete with the 24-hour news cycle, journalists - even high school journalists - need to be extremely timely, and willing to engage in new media like blogging and podcasting. As students continue to learn about journalism and its future, it is essential that they learn these skills, in addition to the basics like accuracy and objectivity.

Your donation will help prepare my dedicated student journalists for a job market that isn't sure of their place in it. Your generosity will help my students continue to build their newspaper's readership and legitimacy, and thus strengthen the scholarly community around which it is built. And your donation will be used for years to come, as classes of journalist-hopefuls learn skills that will help them, both now and in the future. Thank you for your generosity!
