Students want to get caught reading! Help us take our schoolwide independent reading project to the next level. I am the sole librarian at an educational campus which houses 3 public schools in New York. All 3 schools are Title 1, with a majority of our students living in poverty. One of our schools is specifically for special education students. I serve over 800 students from 6th through 12th grade.

Students came to me and asked if we could join the 'Get Caught Reading' campaign. The mission of this national campaign is to remind people how much fun it is to read. A component of this project to display posters and pictures of people from all walks of life reading throughout schools. In addition to having posters of famous people reading up around the school, our students want to see themselves up on the walls. The students are ready to take photos of their fellow students, staff and teachers at school. The teachers are excited to have students take photos during independent reading time. The librarian, is thrilled to turn a section of the library into a photo gallery of those who get caught reading. All we need now is the cameras. Won't you help?

We are requesting 4 digital cameras, rechargeable batteries and SD memory cards. This project is important to the literacy of our students. While there is a core group of student who are avid readers on our campus, most of our students read solely because it is a task assigned by their teachers. The students who wanted to start this project are wanting to share their love of reading with others and have a forum to discuss books. This is just fantastic. Launching this campaign will be an amazing way way to promote literacy. The goal here is two fold. First, there is research that shows students who read more do better on tests and are more likely to succeed in college. Their comprehension increases and thus, their ability to perform across all content areas increases. But the numbers are not the only goal. The second goal is to help our students become life long learners. Reading is a fantastic gateway into the world of life long learning. Many of our students didn't grow up in communities of readers. They don't think of themselves as readers. With this project the students will be able to, literally, see themselves and celebrate themselves as readers.

Your donation will be helping to change the culture of our campus into a reading campus, into a place where what we all read is shared, talked about and celebrated. You will be helping to change the way students look at their reading abilities and gain the confidence they need in order to succeed in their education endeavors. And if you donate to our camera fund we would be happy to display your photo if you want to get caught reading!
