Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Please help me create a cozy, quiet reading refuge! My school is located in a very high-poverty, low-income neighborhood. I teach at an elementary school, all subjects, to a class of hard-working, eager, enthusiastic second graders. As an educator, I try to encourage my children to read independently, especially at home, on their downtime. Many of my students do not have books at home, nor a quiet place where they can sit comfortably, without interruption and read.

Many live in one-room rentals, without a den or their own bedroom. One student came to me and informed me that at home, he often reads in a closet so his younger siblings can not interrupt him! This is his only refuge, as it is for many of my students who are living in unfortunate conditions. Many of my students reside in temporary foster homes and over-crowded living conditions, where there is little time nor space for the children to comfortably read.

My students need a school-age couch, chair and ottoman as a cozy reading corner. Providing my students with a peaceful, colorful, comfortable reading corner will demonstrate to them that reading is fun and wonderful and relaxing activity to engage in. They will be reading for pleasure which is something as an educator is hard to get the children to do, as we have to compete with the media, ipods and video games. This cozy classroom reading "living area" will give the children something most children already have at home, a place to read, but my students do not due to economic circumstances beyond their control. Many of my students love to read and be read to, and this reading/ living room corner will make it more enjoyable and enticing! I feel that this "living room" furniture will help my students associate reading with a relaxing and fun pastime rather than a forced task. They may not have a living room or den at home, but because of you they will have one at school!

Not only will you be providing many of these underprivileged children with a piece of "home", but you will also be creating more fluent and literate members of society. You will be helping change the future and creating a better world for all!
