"Stop picking on me" said one special needs students who has a specific learning disability in reading comprehension. He was tired of other students making fun of him because he was unable to understand large passages of Biology text from a textbook. I am an Inclusion Teacher in Biology I and I assist special needs students as well as regular education students in the Biology I classroom. Our classroom consists of students who are 9th, 10th, and 11th graders who are preparing for college. These students have a rigorous curriculum and must pass a state test in Biology I to be able to graduate from high school. The Biology I teacher and I, a special needs teacher, work together to offer all students the required curriculum and supplemental information to help students understand the concepts that must be covered in the school year.

Our classroom is in desperate need of a computer that can display helpful and interesting research information from the Internet. We have Internet access and a "Smartboard", believe it or not, but the computer equipment will not run the information needed. Our computer is 10 years old and will barely function on an "excellent day" much less a rainy day! It would also be great to have a laser printer to print study material for our students. Extra study material would benefit our students by helping them understand the concepts and help with note taking for the students with special needs.

With a computer that has the capacity to display research information and a laser printer that will provide additional study material, students with specific learning disabilities will not be as likely to be "picked" on for not understanding or comprehending the curriculum. Most students in this technology savvy world are accustom to "being entertained" so as teachers we need the best equipment to compete with the technology that students "play" with each day.

All I want is to offer all the students, not just my special needs students, the full opportunity available to further their education. Without a college degree, students have no hope in finding employment that will support themselves as well as a family. Please help me help the students; all the students including the bullies!
