Contrary to what most people believe about the inner-city youth I teach, my students are great and very thirsty for knowledge. I am a regular education, 10th grade English teacher. Although Maryland is considered one of the wealthiest states in the nation, the public school district I teach in is among the worst in the country. The innovative high school I teach at, although falling under the city's charter school division, is not a charter school and does not receive any additional funding. At present there is no room in our school's budget to purchase extra materials.

Many people refer to the television as the "idiot box". However, there are many learning opportunities waiting on the other side of a television screen. As an English teacher I use plenty of movies, documentaries, etc. that provide excellent support to our core texts as supplemental learning guides. There is one working television on my school's entire second floor. This television is shared by two teams of 10th, 11th and 12th graders. This means that one television is shared between approximately 20 teachers.

My 65 students need a TV-DVD combination and a cart for transporting it. There is a host of movies, documentaries, sitcom clips, etc. that serve as excellent supplemental learning tools. However, without a working television with a DVD player it is more difficult to maximize classroom learning and provide additional textual support. Not only will this type of technology enhance my students’ current learning experiences, but it will prepare them for college and the heavy influence that technology has in the college setting. Even when I was an undergraduate student, years ago, technology was very present throughout my college career. There were many assignments in which I had to watch films, documentaries, news segments, etc. and make the connection between the aforementioned and literature.
