Stop!" "Go!" "Got it!" Those are some of the phrases you will hear coming from the science room and outdoors as (excited) students use stopwatches to complete science experiments. (Who wouldn't be excited learning about how much horsepower one person has? All you need is a timer, recorder, stairs, and runner!) I teach 8th grade in a high-need community with a diverse population. The 8th grade teaching team is dedicated to giving these students a rich educational experience with memorable experiences - which include actively learning science! How would you best understand (and remember) acceleration? By reading about it in a science book or by participating in an accelerometer lab?

Eager to learn and willing to work hard, that is how I describe my students. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources necessary for active learning in science. Stopwatches may not seem like an expensive item that would get in the way of teaching hands-on science, but in our school, it’s an obstacle because there are virtually no funds for science.

We need 15 stopwatches that can be used for science experiments. Students will be working in partners or small groups on physics activities that are interactive and provide enrichment that goes beyond the textbook.

My students have the curiosity, work ethic, and ability. They can master the skills needed for complex science concepts. They just don't have the resources. You can help them keep that curiosity. You can encourage them to work hard. You can contribute to their learning of science. You can help ensure that they will be eager and prepared to take challenging high school science courses because they understand what they've done in science (as opposed to what they've only read about. . .)
