Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an English as a Second Language High School teacher in a large urban school in Illinois. Many of my students are refugees and many live, even here in the United States, in less than favorable conditions. My students are always interested in helping others.

Last year, my students made social studies books for a school in Haiti. Each of my students talked about their own country and culture. Students even learned some Creole and wrote captions under the pictures in their books in Creole. I delivered the books last year to a school in Haiti. Those children were very grateful for these books. But most importantly, my students felt so good about themselves to have accomplished such an important project.

After the book making project, we read a book about teens in Haiti after one of my students from Albania read the book and told everyone in class that it was one of the best books she ever read. This year, we are reading the book again. We started reading the book one week before the devastating earthquake in Haiti occurred. Now, my students are even more intrigued with the country of Haiti. Because the book deals with the Dominican Republic and Haitians working in the cane fields and former president Aristide, they are asking many questions. Kids to Kids, a non-profit organization, has a great video out called "The Price of Sugar". I want my students to watch this video. Both videos would be shown in my classroom in conjunction with the book "Taste of Salt" by Frances Temple which deals with a young Haitian boy who is abducted to work in the cane/sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic. My students have seen the trailer of the movie on-line and are very interested in seeing the movie. It will make the book a little more real in addition of teaching my students about issues they would otherwise not learn about. I want my students to be well rounded in their education to prepare them for college.

This is a great opportunity to help my students be even more informed about current world events. All my students have a goal to go to college and by exposing them to multicultural reading materials and current events, they will learn more about other cultures and not only about their own and the American culture. In addition, since I travel to Haiti at least twice a year and my students are very interested in the projects I work on while I am there, they get to read some exiting stories about the lives of kids their age.
