I teach in a rural school in Georgia where over 50% of our students are economically disadvantaged. Even with that being said the vast majority of our Junior class is college bound. Because of this they all run through my Chemistry class of which I teach 5, very full, periods of a day. I also teach a class of students who are at risk of failing the Georgia High School Graduation test. These students have either failed a required class or required state assessment. This class in particular is almost exclusively economically disadvantaged.

The situation we face here is that technology is hard to come by due to budget restrictions. Parts of chemistry are very theoretical and are hard for visual learners to understand without being able to see in action. Explaining how electron orbitals work is tough when students have no connection to how it actually works.

The solution to our problem is a simple one. A projector that would allow me to show demonstrations, labs and animations to make concepts that seem impossible more concrete. This simple technology will give my students a leg up in understanding concepts they will need to work with during college chemistry classes. It will also help those visual learners gain an advantage not otherwise obtainable without the technology.

Please help my classroom get out of the Stone Age and into the 21st century. The simple addition of technology, in the form of a projector, will not only help my students close the achievement gap even further but will allow them to gain an advantage not other wise available to them upon entering college. The concepts of Chemistry can seem foreign to most 16 year old kids. If they have the visual understanding of how things work imagine the avenues we may open.
